The following is a brief description from the Stokesville Gravel – Little Switzerland 100K Event promoter:
This event passes through the George Washington National Forest along the North River at the edge of the Little River Roadless area on one side and Ramseys Draft Wilderness Area on the other. After passing over the lowest gap on the mightly Shenandoah Mountain the route turns up into the back roads of Highland County known as “Little Switzerland”.
The crux of the event is the descent down Sally Hiner a rolling gravel road that drops steeply down to the Calfpasture River twisting and winding down to its scenic bottom segment along a magical creek. A quick zigzag puts you at our support station and you begin retracing your path back over Shenandoah Mountain with a suprise detour on Leading Ridge Road that gives some super majectic view of the Shenandoah Valley before dropping you into the finish at the Stokesville Campground.
