Clear Creek – Cook Forest Gravel Route

The Clear Creek – Cook Forest Gravel Route traverses a plethora of sweet gravel and public lands on the southwestern end of the PA Wilds. JB was introduced to this area when he explored it as a kid with his Dad. He was reintroduced to it as an adult when he stayed with his good buddy at his hunting camp affectionately known as “Camp Mold”. The camp was rough around the edges, but was surrounded by a small slice of PA public-lands-heaven.

Like most unpaved cyclists during the pandemic, JB was looking for adventure and new places to explore. Good memories of the area drew him back. Those memories JB experienced with his Dad and buddy, while somewhat faded, sprang alive as he explored the Clear Creek State Forest / Cook Forest State Park area anew. Below you will find a route that highlights some of the discovered beauty.

Route Description

JB set out to create a route that was challenging, but approachable. We think it checks those boxes. The gravel is fairly smooth with limited gnarliness. The elevation profile is a mix of short, punchy climbs typically found in western PA and longer sustained climbs of central PA, which is apt since the area is kinda between the two.

Much of the route is shaded. This is nice in the hotter months, but may present challenges during the shoulder seasons and colder months. Several roads do not see any winter maintenance and can be quite treacherous after snowfall. We rode the route in autumn and again at the end of March. There was a fair amount of remaining snow/ice on the roads during the latter ride.

With respect to nutrition, the first 35ish miles do not pass by any fuel stops. There are a few possible detours for supplies (e.g., the town of Clarington), but prepare to self-support to the extent you aren’t into detours. There are some water sources along this section for those with filters. For example, the Clarion River traverses this part of the Clear Creek – Cook Forest Gravel Route. You can fill up there (or take a nice dip on a hot day). The first spot on route to stop for provisions is just prior to entering Cook Forest State Park.

Below you will find pictures of the terrain out on route. The roughest section begins at about mile 43 when you turn onto Iron Bridge Road. This 7ish mile section descends and climbs some rough state game lands roads. Pictures of the section are forthcoming. Because the route passes through game lands, check out The Hub’s Trail User Best Practices During PA Hunting Season article if you are riding during any hunting seasons.
